Time for Apartment Search

The apartment rental market can move fast — sometimes too fast! Many folks on the brink of moving often wonder, “how long does it take to get an apartment?” It depends on where you live and what kind of apartment you’re searching for! The following guidelines can help your search for a new apartment go smoothly — and on your timeline.

What to do when you’re six months away from moving:

Months ahead of moving, you’ll need to budget for new rent and moving-related expenses. Will you upgrade your space? If so, you’ll want to budget for additional rent. Begin a dedicated savings effort six months before your planned move. And, if possible, it’s a good idea to have that many months of rent saved up before your big transition. It’s an achievable goal if you:

  • Factor in a portion of your current savings (leaving some aside for emergencies)
  • Reduce expenses and apply the savings to your upcoming move
  • Devote the recommended 30% of your current income to rent, an amount that may help you set aside some of your remaining monthly income

Considering that the average length of unemployment in the U.S. is about three months, these six months of rent and related expenses may help you bridge even the most difficult of times.

…three months away:

What do you need to apply for an apartment? A game plan! Unless you have a crystal ball, there’s nothing better than a solid game plan to make the most of the three months before your move.

And your game plan starting at this point should include a reliable way to determine how many apartments will be available. It’s possible to get a good idea of the searching lead time you’ll need by:

  • Looking at apartment listings three months before your anticipated move
  • Noting the “move-in” dates posted for those apartments most appealing to you
  • Calculating the average by tallying the move-in times and dividing that total by the number of apartments

As you begin this process, review your current lease to see how much notice you must provide before moving. The http://www.SkyloftPgh.com is available in May 2022!

… two months away:

When you’re a couple of months out from needing to move, begin your dedicated apartment search. Apartment communities should have inventory available that coincides with your desired move-in date. The http://www.SkyloftPgh.com is available in May 2022! Think back to your preliminary searches: which apartment complexes stood out to you during that effort? Which ones didn’t offer the amenities you need? Giving yourself a two-month buffer allows you to schedule apartment tours on your lunch breaks or other times convenient for your schedule.

Two months out also allows you enough time to learn about your new area! Explore a Downtown Pittsburgh, see video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPjjmcZ3zsI, to help you get familiar with things to do, places to eat, and sights to see in your new neighborhood.

… one month away:

Ideally, by now, you’ve located an apartment that looks like a great fit! With a month to go before your move date, it’s time to fill out an application for the apartment of your choice. Call Janet at 412.943.7660

So, how long does it take to process an apartment application? It can vary from management company to management company, but you can typically expect a 48 – 72 hour turnaround. Applications usually ask for:

  • Proof of employment
  • Photo ID
  • Credit check
  • Current address and phone number
  • Monthly income

Leaving information off your application wastes valuable time as the management company must stop processing it and contact you to fill in the blanks.

Tip: if you need to speed up the apartment application process, show up at the leasing office with a cashier’s check in hand!

What should you do if you need to move immediately?

Sometimes, circumstances require you to jump into a search immediately. Moving out before your lease is up CAN incur unforeseen fees, so weigh the pros and cons before packing up. If cutting your lease short is ultimately the best decision, it’s a good idea to remember that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line — and your straightest line to apartments for rent available now is http://www.StarLoftsPgh.com. Find available apartments online quickly with our apartment locator. With up-to-date results, you’re sure to find the starloftpgh that works for you!

Save Energy and Money While Staying Comfortable This Winter at Starloftspgh.com

In you StarloftPgh apartment in downtown Pittsburgh manage your comfort and utility bills.

Don’t just set one temperature and forget about it. Get in the habit of turning it down several degrees every night before you go to bed. If you’re like most people, you sleep better in the winter when lying snugly under several blankets. You can’t do that when the furnace is heating the http://www.starloftspgh.com to 75F all night (plus you’ll break the furnace that way).

• Manage the thermostat part 2. If you are away from your apartment and expect to be gone all day, turn down the thermostat before you leave. There’s absolutely no reason to heat an abandoned apartment eight hours every day. Turn the heat back on when you get home.

• Manage the thermostat part 3. Consider using a lower temperature setting for normal daytime and evening hours when the apartment is occupied. Just give 68 degrees a try, rather than 70, 72 or 74. You might find that you become accustomed to the lower temperature setting. If you’re still chilly, throw on an extra layer of clothing. This can save you abundant bucks on your gas and/or electric bills.

• Manage the thermostat part 4. If you have house or apartment partners, have a quick meeting to establish who has the responsibility to manage the thermostat, either all the time or week to week. You definitely want to avoid a situation where two or three people are constantly changing the setting.

• Close doors to unused rooms and shut the heating registers or vents in those rooms. The less space your central heating system has to service, the more efficiently (and cheaply) it can heat the rest of your apartment. However, there’s one caveat to this. If you close up too much of the apartment, your furnace or heat pump likely will short-cycle. This means it quickly heats the “open” parts of the apartmentq, then shuts down. It stops and starts time after time, which itself wastes energy and stresses the equipment. So in general, it’s OK to block heat to one or two bedrooms but not an entire floor.

The http://www.starloftspgh.com of downtown Pittsburgh have high insulation value to keep you very comfy during the cold winter months

Have a great day! Janet

How to Give Your Bedroom That Dark Academia Aesthetic That Every Bookworm Loves

Andrea Neculae

ByAndrea NeculaeDecember 6, 2021

The dark academia aesthetic has seen a rise in popularity in the past 18 months, making it one of the pandemic’s fastest-growing trends. Revolving around classic literature (particularly ancient Greek) and the pursuit of knowledge, dark academia is more of a lifestyle than a fashion choice. What began on Tumblr in the mid-2000s as a book club with a gothic twist today romanticizes academic life at Ivy League universities, such as Harvard and Yale. And, with many students left this year to live out their college experiences in their childhood bedrooms, the appeal of a preppy campus is undeniable.

dark academia

However, dark academia doesn’t have an age limit, and you don’t need cobblestone walls or pointed arches to achieve this look in your own bedroom.

dark academia

Color Me Moody

As the name suggests, this aesthetic is mysterious and dark — and so is its color scheme. Earthy colors are also commonly used to convey that beginning-of-the-school-year, autumn feel. Meanwhile, if you want something more exciting than muted earth tones (like beige, brown and off-white), a burgundy and olive green mix can be the choice for you.

Granted, as a renter, you may not always be allowed to paint the walls or stain the floors, so you might need to get creative with your use of the dark academia palette. For example, removable wallpaper is a no-strings-attached solution to giving your bedroom walls a darker vibe. Likewise, potted plants are also a great renter-friendly way to add color to the room, while keeping in line with the look you want to achieve. Plus, plants that fit this sub-culture best (which are usually from the ivy family) are a renter’s dream because they’re low maintenance.

dark academia

Going Back to The Roots

Don’t forget what dark academia is all about: Books. Arrange them on a bookshelf, stack them or use them as your bedside table. Just make sure they’re everywhere. Specifically, “The Secret History” by Donna Tartt is hailed as a staple of dark academia and is a must-have in your book collection, along with “The Iliad,” “Dead Poets Society,” “Pride and Prejudice” and anything by Oscar Wilde. And, the older the books, the better. Not only will they give you that vintage feel that you’re going for, but their sweet, musky smell will also add to the experience.

dark academia

Plaid It Cool

When it comes to fabrics, use rich patterns and heavy, ornate tapestry. To that end, adhesive strips are a sure-fire way to adorn your walls with textile art — without damaging the walls and ensuring you get your security deposit back. Luxurious materials — such as cashmere and wool — should also be on your decorating list. After all, you’re trying to replicate the way of life of Romantic-era nobles and upper-class American preppies. And, remember that there’s no room for minimalism here, so layer your bed with duvets and blankets, and add some plaid or tweed pillows for extra coziness.

dark academia

Have Decorating Down to a Fine Art

If you’re attracted to the dark academia aesthetic, you’ll most likely be found wondering around museums and art galleries or listening to Tchaikovsky while sipping tea. If this sounds like you, don’t be afraid to showcase your interest in the humanities: Musical instruments, Greek sculptures and art supplies can make excellent décor. Moreover, you can find all of these items in thrift stores, second-hand shops or garage sales, making them affordable. And, don’t worry about wear and tear — it will only add to their charm.

dark academia

Lumos!

A common motif for dark academia is chiaroscuro, which is the contrast between brightness and darkness. Most rooms that are decorated using this aesthetic are illuminated by flickering lights. The magical world of Hogwarts is considered dark academia by many, so you can take inspiration for your Muggle bedroom from its candle-lit corridors. And, while a hanging chandelier checks all of the boxes of a more theatrical, decadent feel, it isn’t an option for everyone. Instead, scour your nearest antique shops for a vintage lampshade or a lamplight to curl up next to with your favorite book.

dark academia

Don’t Shun Technology

Social media has always been a place of self-expression for mainstream styles and many subcultures. And, with the help of algorithms, users can more easily become immersed in the internet aesthetic of their choice. As a result, nothing is too niche — if you can think of it, you can find a mood board of it on Pinterest. And, of course, there’s a community out there for dark academics to share ideas, visuals and hobbies. Although technology doesn’t seem to match the core of sweater-knitting, flower-pressing, calligraphy-writing academics, it’s nonetheless a great source of inspiration. Your vast collection of highbrow literature can also come in e-book form, especially if you don’t have enough space for a library.

The #darkacademia has surpassed 1 million posts on Instagram, and the topic has sprouted many YouTube videos, including tutorials and hour-long whimsical playlists. All of this along, with its multiple facets and timelessness, make dark academia a trend that seems to be here to stay.

Downtown Pittsburgh Listing Deal You Will Want to Check Out in December

For many of us, it’s hard to pass up an opportunity to live in Downtown Pittsburgh, especially when you find an amazing deal. This is what RentHop likes to refer to internally as gems. Thanks to years of accumulated rental data, we have some of the most affordable and quality rental listings the Downtown Pittsburgh has to offer. Our inventory of listings has grown exponentially over the years, this of one our favorite deals for rental listings.

The phenomenon of low supply/inventory of available listings continues into the month of December though demand has started to wane due to seasonality and the introduction of the new Omicron coronavirus variant. As a result, rental concessions being offered by StarLoftsPgh.com are remaining steady at pre pandemic rates (on average one month free) with some buildings not even offering any. Thankfully, RentHop is still getting a great inventory of gems. Today we’ll focus on some of our favorite deals in downtown Pittsburgh this coming December!

First Night at the StarLoftsPgh.com

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust looks forward to ringing in 2022 with a bang – and a band — with the Byron Nash Trio headlining the Highmark First Night.

“The midnight show with Byron Nash on the Highmark main stage is going to be such a fun way to ring in 2022,” said Director of Festival Management Sarah Aziz.

The Byron Nash Trio will play from 10:45p to midnight. Before that you’ll be able to hear performances from other artists while checking out a parade, ice sculptures, theatre performances, acrobatics, and many other displays including an art installation from Australia featuring massive rabbits.

“In this Trust Oasis space are going to be the three baby rabbits and they stand about 12 feet tall, so they’re pretty little,” said Aziz. “Their momma rabbit’s going to be right over on 8th St. right on the other side of these buildings in that parking lot and she stands about 50 feet tall.”

The night will cap off with a fireworks grand finale at midnight.

“It’s just such a fun way to get out and enjoy the city, remember what it’s like to be out amongst people in a safe, fun, festive environment,” said Aziz.

The event is free and open to the public, but some portions of the event do require tickets which you will need to register for in advance.

To attend these festivities, just go to your front door, and down your steps…you are there!
